Cape Agulhas day tours -We travel along the N2 towards Sir Lowry's Pass where you can have a spectacular view of False Bay. We stop at a Farm stall for some refreshment and then we continue our trip through Caledon and in Bredasdorp we visit the Shipwreck museum. The rocky coast line of Cape Agulhas has proved to be disastrous for shipping, therefore it is known as the graveyard of ships.
Before the Suez Canal was constructed, a trade route between Western Europe and the east was established round the tip of Africa. In 1840 international pressure, especially from Eastern Cities and also from London resulted in the decision to establish a lighthouse at the foot of Africa. The Cape Agulhas light house styled on the famous Pharos light house of Alexander in Egypt was completed in December 1848.
In March of 1849 the candle powered lighthouse shone for the first time. In the early years fat from the fat-tailed sheep in the area was burned to fuel the light. Today the beam has a range of thirty nautical miles and an intensity of 7500 000 candlepower. The light house is about one kilometer from the southernmost tip of Africa. Touring the Cape Agulhas is a must as according to the Hydrograhic Society this is where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet which is the most southern tip of Africa. |
